During the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States Periods, there were many horse-readers, each of whom had a different perspective in judging good horses, forming various schools of thought and laying the foundation for the ancient horse-reading science of China. Wang Liang of the State of Zhao, Fang Jiugao of the State of Qin, and especially famously, Sun Yang, the supervisor of Duke Mu of Qin, were honored by the world for their excellent horse-reading skills, and were called Bole. Bole’s “Horse-reading Scripture” is the world’s earliest work on horse-reading, and has been passed down to the present day. Other horse-reading scriptures were published in the Tang Dynasty.
